Obituary for Clare A. Marquis-Rutkowski (Marquis)

Marquis-Rutkowski, Clare A., of Danvers, passed peacefully surrounded by her family on November 3, following a private and graceful battle with ALS.

Beloved wife of Mark Rutkowski. Mother of Timothy Coombs, Dr. Allison Coombs and husband George Horn, Evan and Ayden Rutkowski. Grandmother of Isla Clare Horn. Daughter of Emma (Thomas) and the late George A. Marquis. Sister of George Marquis, Margaret Marquis-Hemeon and husband Ronald, Alicia Marquis Sheridan and husband Philip, William Marquis, Robert Marquis and wife Irina. Also survived by several nieces, nephews and extended family members.

A lifelong learner and intellectual, Clare excelled academically. She graduated summa cum laude and first-ranking student in Science and Engineering at Merrimack College, and achieved a Doctor of Pharmacy from MCPHS. She worked as a pharmacist, and made many friends throughout her career.

Clare’s greatest love was her family. She shined as holiday hostess, providing guests with elaborate meals and tablescapes. Clare’s interests included gardening, raising award-winning chickens, and genealogy. Her backyard was her sanctuary, and allowed for bonfires, croquet tournaments, and quality time spent with family.

As Clare sensed she was becoming ill, she fulfilled a dream by travelling to Ireland, where she reveled in the culture and her heritage. Upon her diagnosis in 2016, she traveled to Italy and England, as she privately faced her illness with grace and optimism.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours at The DeVito Funeral Home, 1145 Mass Avenue, Arlington, Tuesday 3:00 to 7:00pm, and to Clare's funeral mass on Wednesday at 11:30 at St. Eulalia Church, Winchester. Interment to follow at Mt. Auburn Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to ALS research: ALS TDI, 300 Technology Square Suite 400, Cambridge, MA. https://www.als.net/donate
